Özet:

After the coup of May 27, 1960, many people with different views came together under the leadership of Ragıp Gümüşpala and founded the Justice Party AP. Gumuspala, who held his organization together with his balanced and inclusive leadership, achieved significant success in the 1961 elections in which he participated for the first time, making the AP one of the most effective parties of the period. With the unexpected death of Gümüşpala in 1964, differences of opinion within the party came to the fore, and a struggle for inheritance began. Four people were candidates for the presidency of the EP, but there was a fierce presidential race between Süleyman Demirel and Sadettin Bilgiç. Although Demirel announced his candidacy late, he came to the fore by making his impact felt in a short time with the support of the press and local and foreign business circles. The Second Grand Congress of the AP, which lasted three days, was one of the best examples of intra-party democracy in the history of the republic. The whole public, biased or impartial, appreciated the maturity of the Congress process. Demirel was elected as chairman by an overwhelming majority. Aware of the peoples expectations, Demirel carried his party to power in the first elections he participated in, by skillfully using his personal characteristics, leadership qualities, and oratory skills, and conveying the right messages. After this, the AP became one of the parties that guided politics until the 1980 military coup. This study focuses on the events that took place during the election of the new leader of the AP after Gümüşpala. At the same time, an evaluation was made regarding the organizational structure of the party. Mostly the press of the period was used, and copyrighted works and scientific theses were used as supporting sources.
