Özet:

The main purpose of the article is to focus on the work of Ilija Garašanin, a prominent Serbian statesman and diplomat who devoted himself to the modernization of the Serbian state in the 19th century. The article will evaluate the progress of the Serbian state and Garašanins countribution to this process. The study was prepared according to Serbian sources. In explaining the attitude of the Serbs towards the Ottoman Empire and the great powers the situation of the Serbian Principality when Garašanin entered the public service and how his attitudes changed during his political career will be emphasized. Considering that Garašanin spent three decades in service, it is particularly important to look at his views on his policy towards the Ottomans and the Sublime Porte. He was sometimes given wrong label of a statesman who supported Ottoman policy. But when we look at his dedication to the development of the national program, it becomes clear that Garašanin tried to do everything for the benefit of the Serbian people. In domestic politics he did everything according to laws and regulations and was considered one of the best administrators of the Defenders of the Constitution Era. The artical deals with the ideas from Načertanije Draft, the first program on the national and foreign policy of Serbia. It deals with the complex situation of Principality of Serbia in the international arena, where great powers such as Austria, Russia, England and France struggled to gain more influence over the Ottoman Empire.
