Özet:

Ivan Gustav Gerber was born in Brandenburg-Prussia and began his military career at a very young age. During the Great Northern War, he served in the army of Saxony, an ally of Russia, and then joined the ranks of Tsarist Russia, rising rapidly. Gerber drew attention especially with his military and administrative work in the Caucasus. In 1732, he was asked by Tsarist Russia to travel to Khiva and Bukhara disguised as a merchant. During this dangerous journey, he was attacked by Kyrgyz near the Emba River on his way to Bukhara, and he was able to survive this attack with great difficulty and reach Astrakhan. Gerber tried to convey the military and political chaos of the period by recording all the difficulties he encountered during his journey in his diaries. It is possible to understand the depth of the struggle for survival in the harsh geography of Turkestan from these records. In his diaries, his negotiations with both enemy forces and local merchants and the strategic decisions he made are remarkable. His diplomatic moves and decisions in Gerbers notes reveal the geopolitical environment of eighteenth-century Turkestan. This journey also provides important clues about the social, cultural and economic structure of the period.
