Özet:

Political caricature, a medium in which comments and analyses on the political agenda are made through drawings, has been attributed importance in the print media for many years and has been allocated space on the front pages of many newspapers. Due to this power, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on political cartoons in the literature. However, when the related studies are analysed, it is seen that the studies mainly focus on domestic politics. There are few studies that specifically examine foreign policy issues that can be defined as national issues. This study, which focuses on the year 1955, when the Cyprus problem officially became one of Turkeys prioritized foreign policy agendas, seeks to fill this gap in the field with its findings. Analyzing the Cyprus caricatures of Mustafa Eremektar and Turhan Selçuk, the chief caricaturists of the leading newspapers of the period, Akşam and Milliyet, using Rudolf Wittkowers interpretation method, the study reveals that many messages were conveyed through symbols and icons. In particular, Greeces periodical weaknesses were underlined with humour and it was emphasised that Greece was dreaming of a nightmare. It was determined that the caricaturists took a similar stance on Cyprus, which they regarded as a national issue, and that national identity shaped the content.
