Özet:

The concept of levirat, which etymologically originates from Latin and today means the brother of the husband, is of great interest in Turkic cultural history studies. Levirat marriage, which is an ancient tradition and appears not only in Turks but also in some tribes in Africa, America and Australia, Jewish communities, pre-Islamic Arabs and Hindu tradition, has been used to explain the situation of marrying the widow of a deceased brother. In Turkic and Mongolian peoples, this type of marriage, which is also seen in the form of marrying the widow of the deceased brother as well as the widows of the deceased father, i.e. stepmothers, was widely practised in Turkish states such as the Huns, Gokturks, Uighurs, Karakhanids, Ghaznavids, Seljuks and Timurids. As a result of the prohibition of marriages with stepmother after the Turks converted to Islam, levirate marriages, which continued to be performed only with the widow of the deceased brother, were also seen in the Crimean Khanate, which is our subject. The Crimean Khanate, one of the khanates that emerged as a result of the disintegration of the Golden Horde, strengthened over time and became a regional power. Some of the sons of Mengli Giray Khan I, one of the rulers of this khanate, married the widows of their deceased brothers. In addition to these levirate marriages that we have identified in the sources, there are also hints of some marriage contracts that are not certain whether they were levirate marriages or not. There is information that after the sons of Mengli Giray Khan I, a number of khans and khanzadas had levirate marriages with the wives of their deceased brothers. In this study, the existence of levirate marriages in the Crimean Khanate was analysed and some conclusions were reached.
