Özet:

Legal translation, which is seen as one of the most difficult translation types, is gaining more importance day by day in the globalizing world. For this reason, the fact that legal translators have various abilities in both cognitive and sensory fields has a share in high quality of translated legal texts and therefore in the accuracy of legal decisions based on these texts. Legal translators are expected to have basic legal knowledge and to be competent in understanding and expressing the cultural equivalents of different terms and uses. As well as having the correct translation of the terms that correspond to different legal systems, it is very important for translators to understand and accurately convey the emotions of people by using their emotional intelligence, which includes their personal, emotional and social competencies, in order for judges -who read or hear the relevant translations- to make the right decisions in the justice system. The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of the emotional intelligence of legal translators and its possible effect on the decision mechanism by using the descriptive research method through analysing interviews made with 4 judges and 5 legal translators. This study reveals the need to develop the emotional intelligence skills of legal translators, as it is a subject that has never been studied before in the field of legal translation. As a result, in order to make the right decisions in the justice system, it should be ideal and targeted that legal translators have strong non-cognitive abilities such as stress management, empathy, communication skills, and ability to understand, express and transfer emotions.
