Özet:

The aim of this study is to examine the spread of misinformation on social media platforms during times of extraordinary circumstances such as the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, using the example of Teyit.org. In this context, 101 instances of misinformation related to the two major earthquakes between February 6 and April 6, 2023, are analyzed. Findings derived from this study, which utilizes quantitative content analysis, indicate that Platform X is the primary source of misinformation, while TikTok garners the highest engagement for misinformation dissemination. The analyzed misinformation predominantly revolves around relief efforts and the destructiveness of the earthquakes. Moreover, the subject matter of misinformation varies across different social media platforms, with misinformation pertaining to relief efforts being prevalent on Platform X, whereas TikTok predominantly features misinformation regarding the severity of the earthquakes. Additionally, no discernible variation is observed in terms of the type of false information disseminated during the examined period, with erroneous correlation being the most common form of misinformation. This study contributes significantly to understanding the types, dissemination, and engagement of misinformation on social media platforms during disaster periods. The findings could aid in the development of strategies to combat misinformation during similar disaster events.
