Özet:

The acceptance of architecture as a field within modern history sparked fundamental questions about its definition, methodology, and the nature of architectural history itself. Vitruvius Ten Books on Architecture, a foundational text on architectural principles, is often considered the origin of architectural historiography. This early approach, focused on construction guidance, evolved as architecture became recognized as deeply interconnected with artistic and cultural contexts, hence the emergence of diverse forms of architectural historiography. In his book titled What is Architectural History? 2010, Andrew Leach b. 1976 explores this disciplinary evolution and its challenges. He categorizes different historiographical approaches under six headings: Style and Period, Biography, Geography and Culture, Type, Technique, Theme and Analogy. Analysis of Leachs historiographical approaches reveals that Turkish architectural history predominantly employs the Style and Period framework. Analysis of established architectural periodization shows that Sedad Hakkı Eldem 1908-1988, though prolific across periods, is primarily associated with the Second National Architecture style within Turkish architectural history. This emphasis risks obscuring a holistic understanding of his work. Such categorization can reflect a historiographical tendency to canonize architects, limiting broader interpretations. With the aim of solving this problem, Eldems productions in all periods that are the subject of architectural historiography have been examined holistically and analyzed from a different perspective that takes into account the biography approach, taking into account non-architectural factors.
