Özet:

The books of Mehmed Şemseddin Pasha, one of the intellectual bureaucrats of the late Ottoman period, were inherited by his son Orhan Şemseddin Bey after his death. Mehmet Şemseddin Bey who had financial difficulties sold some of the books to be able to meet his essential needs. He also attempted to sell approximately three thousand manuscripts and printed books to the Ministry of Education. The books, which contained many valuable works of different cultural zones from east to west, of different languages from Persian to French, and of various collections from Sufism to mathematics, could not be purchased as the relevant Ministry did not have enough budget for their purchase. After this attempt of Orhan Şemseddin Bey; Although it is not possible to track how many of, at what price and where the books in question were sold, we reached out a small portion of the books at the Millet Manuscript Library of the Turkiye Manuscripts Institution. This article, along with revealing the tragic fate of a personal collection comprising the accumulation of half a century long life, aims at making a contribution to the intellectual biography of Mehmed Şemseddin Pasha. It also opens up a discussion the extent to which library inventory enables biographical analysis. One of the most significant outputs of the article is uncovering the richest BabiBahai collection in Turkiye.
