Özet:

The island of Cyprus, which came under Turkish sovereignty in the 16th century, was temporarily left to England as a precondition for a defense treaty with Britain after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire to Russia in the 1877-78 war. In 1878, a new administration was granted under British rule in Cyprus, where it changed the way it was governed many times during the period under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. This new era, which occurred after long-term Ottoman rule, had multifaceted reflections in Cyprus. The Greeks, who make up a significant part of the population of Cyprus, considered the start of British rule on the island as an important opportunity for their own ideals. They expected the Greek Cypriots to contribute to the economic development of the island, as well as their political expectations of the islands unification with Greece and the fact that it is an autonomous or independent state. For this reason, they used the advantage of the population majorities in the new order that they saw as the most liberal state of the period, and demanded certain rights and privileges in favor of the Greeks. However, the uncertainty of the islands status and the possibility of extradition to the Ottoman Empire prompted the Greeks on the island to be careful about their demands. Although the reforms of the British administration in Cyprus for the island fell short of the expectations of the Greek community, they preferred the British administration over the Ottoman administration and sought to obtain some rights and privileges from them at every opportunity.Neon Kition newspaper has been and important tool used by Greek Cypriots to create form public opinion on the island and express their demands.
