Özet:

Until the end of the 18th century, history had been perceived as a form of writing, such as literature, and had been studied within the realm of rhetoric; however, towards the end of the 18th century, it emerged as a separate scientific discipline apart from literature. In the 19th century, with claims of objectivity, history was approached to the natural sciences, thus completely separating from literature. The fictional dimension of historical science, which became detached from literature, resurfaced, and this time quite radically, with the emergence of Postmodern Historical Theory and the Theory of New Historicism. This study first addresses the processes in which history approached and distanced itself from literature, then provides basic information about Postmodern Historical Theory and the Theory of New Historicism based on a pluralist understanding of history, which suggests that different histories can be written. The study then discusses the historical dimension of fiction as historical writing theory becomes postmodern, opening up the debate on the genre of historical novels. Should historical novelists adhere to historical facts, or do they have the right to shape the so-called reality as they wish, as in Postmodern Historical Theory and the Theory of New Criticism? This study seeks to answer this fundamental question, concluding that novelists do not have unlimited freedom over historical material. Finally, Buket Uzuners novel Gelibolu, published in 2001, is discussed, revealing how Uzuner reflects the fundamental dynamics of Postmodern Historical Theory and the Theory of New Historicism through the characters and events in the novel.
