Özet:

This article underlines the importance of studying social movements to understand recent political shifts. It focuses on Kazakhstan after independence, exploring how social movements have arisen and how social and economic conditions have shaped the countrys politics. The Arab Spring showed that demands for change arent limited to the Western world. Contention on limited democracy in a globalized world, economic decline, and a growing rich-poor gap have fueled protests worldwide. By examining Kazakhstans protests since 2010, the article reveals some common threads in these global movements. However, it acknowledges that these protests havent yet formed a unified push for democracy in Kazakhstan, a problem shared by similar movements elsewhere.
