Özet:

Ani is a Medieval Age city which is 42 km away and bonded to the Central of Kars. The nearest settlement centre is the village of Ocaklı. The archaeological research carried out in the city revealed the information that the city was used earliest in the Early Bronze Age Early Transcaucasian Culture Period . In the excavations carried out in the Harmanyeri site which is located between Ani and the villages of Cirittepe and Ocaklı that located on Bostanlı River at the western side of the Ani, a very characteristic earthenware pot with handle dated to Early Bronze Age Early Transcaucasian Culture and sarcophagus tombs dated to Middle Bronze Age has been reached. 9 pieces of Aras painteds are also among the archeological works of this period, which are dated to the Middle Bronze Age again and brought to Kars Museum. Other than 9 pieces of monochrome pottery also a pottery sherd which possibly belongs to the beak of the monochrome large earthenware jar was also determined. The goose ornamentation depicted on this painted Aras indicates that the goose culture in Kars is ongoing nearly four thousand years. Partially from the eastern and southern of the city the Arpaçay River and from the western of the city the Bostanlar River passes through. These aspects of the city have a natural defense system due to the deep valleys occurred by these rivers. Despite this, the city wall system that we have just determined and will be presented for the first time that is in the direction of the valley occurred by Bostanlar River, indicates that this region is locally faulty in terms of the defense of this region. However the region that is located in the northern part of the city and named as Yevşan/ Yavşan plain is the most inconvenient place of the city for the defense. In this section a complex defense system is existing. These defense systems are belonging to the Early Iron Age, Bagrationi Kingdom and Seljuk periods. The oldest of these defense systems is the city walls belonging to the Early Iron Age and it indicates that the city experienced a settlement during this period. As a result of the systematic researches we carried out in the city of Ani and its surroundings since the last three years, the other defense system that belongs to the Urartu city walls which we have determined last year in the citadel. These city walls were built with face stone blocks. During the Persian Empire period reinforcement was conducted to these Urartian defensive walls. In the researches that we performed this year, the city walls relating to a new defense system were reached on the west side of the city facing the Bostanlar River, that can be dated to the Iron Age. These defense systems located in three different regions of the city of Ani indicates that the city was used to be a very significant center and experienced a settlement in the 2nd and 1st Millenium B.C.
