Özet:

Since their existence, human beings have transferred their feelings, beliefs, life stories, values, dreams, future, etc. to weavings such as carpets and rugs using symbolic language. Each motif is an expression of a feeling. The lion figure, which carries many meanings such as war, victory, good over evil, and the symbol of strength and power, is among the motifs encountered in rug weavings. In this study, eight lion-patterned rugs identified in the Erzurum and Kars regions were examined; they were introduced with their dating, material, technique, color and composition features. It was determined that the examined samples belonged to the end of the 19th century and continued to be woven until the mid-20th century. It was observed that completely wool warp was used in old samples, while cotton warp was used in those woven in the mid-20th century. The subject was strengthened by comparing similarities with lion-patterned rugs identified in different regions. In addition, the story of the rugs was conveyed in line with the information received from the source persons. Lion rugs, which were the most valuable dowry items in the past, are now almost non-existent. This shows that wall rugs, which are an important cultural treasure, are in danger of being forgotten. The study is important in terms of introducing the lion rugs identified in the Erzurum and Kars regions and providing resources for new research.
