Özet:

The aim of this study is to answer the question: Are technological innovations TI and natural resources NR effective on ecological footprint EF in Türkiye?. In the study, the Toda-Yamamoto causality test was applied using annual data for the period 1984-2019. The literature generally suggests that TI decreases EF, while NR increases EF. However, our causality analysis for Türkiye reveals that neither variable has a direct effect on EF. The findings suggest that technology policies and natural resource revenues do not play a significant role in environmental sustainability in Türkiye. Another finding is that EF is the cause of TI. This can be interpreted as increasing environmental pressure encouraging investments in new technologies. While the results of the study support the findings in the literature that TI has no effect on EF, they provide a novel contribution specific to Türkiye, concluding that NR does not affect EF. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Türkiye focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and waste management in its environmental sustainability policies and adopt strategies aimed at maximizing the environmental benefits of technology.
