Özet:

In modern Arabic literature, the short story emerged as a prominent literary form, particularly through the contributions of authors such as Mahmoud Taymour and Omar Farouk. Evolving under the influence of Western cultural currents throughout the 20th century, the short story began to address not only the inner world of the individual but also broader societal transformations and political conflicts. In Iraqi literature, the short story genre, especially from the 1980s onward, was profoundly shaped by the experiences of war, occupation, and displacement, leading to works that foreground social traumas through individual narratives. Within this framework, Iraqi writer and screenwriter Hassan Blasim has distinguished himself with his original and innovative approach to contemporary Arabic short fiction. This study analyzes The Berlin Truck شاحنة برلين, a short story included in Blasims collection The Corpse Exhibition معرض الجثث, focusing on its thematic concerns and narrative techniques. The story foregrounds critical themes such as post-war individual and societal collapse, the experience of illegal migration, identity crises, alienation, and the erosion of human dignity. Employing elements of surrealism and dark humor, Blasim poignantly captures the tragic consequences of the desperate waves of migration from the Middle East to Europe. The Berlin Truck vividly illustrates how individuals are objectified by historical and political forces, and how violence, uncertainty, and dehumanization become normalized aspects of everyday life. Through an analysis of Blasims narrative strategies, this article seeks to situate his work within the broader framework of modern migration literature and to highlight his contributions to Arab diaspora writing. Additionally, the study examines Blasims innovative use of language and his distinctive method of narrating trauma through literary expression.
