Özet:

In discussions of theodicy in Western philosophy, Leibniz is indispensable; yet two of the most influential modern accounts of evil are Kants concept of radical evil and Hannah Arendts thesis of the banality of evil. Arendtone of the foremost thinkers of the twentieth centuryexplored the problem of evil, which in that century assumed a qualitatively new form, on a secular plane detached from religious and theological categories. Focusing on moral evil that presupposes human will, intention, and responsibility, she advanced the provocative claim that evil can be banal: not monstrous in motive but ordinary in execution. Thus, in her thought the question shifts from God to humanity, and the central concern becomes why human beings commit evil. Arendt formulated the thesis during the trial of Nazi functionary Adolf Eichmann, grounding it in the Platonic demand for thinking and the Socratic ideal of being in harmony with oneself. By banality she refers not to the triviality of the crimes but to the ordinariness of the perpetrators: they neither know their victims nor harbour personal malice; they are, in her words, shallow, distinguished chiefly by a thoughtlessness that sets no limit to the evil they may enable. The first part of this article analyses Arendts concept of the banality of evil. The impetus for writing, however, is to understand the ongoing evilindeed, genocidein Gaza. The second part therefore argues that Arendts account is insufficient to explain the Gaza genocide. What we witness is a situation in which Israel, empowered by weapons of mass destruction, media influence, and the backing of major world powers, has integrated evil into its very identity. Evil has become routine, asserted as a right, and displayed with an aggression that feels no need for concealment. Unlike earlier atrocities that were veiled in shame, the Gaza genocide is carried out with brutal pride. Guided by a Zionist ideology that instrumentalises Jewish historical suffering and resentment, Israel commits acts that meet the definition of genocide. Hence Arendts linkage of evil to a lack of ideas, and her notion of banality, cannot account for Gaza, where evil is neither ignorant nor accidental but self-aware, justified, and ostentatious. What emerges is an evil more extreme than that of the Nazis: shameless, brazen, and unrepentant. This genocide did not begin recently; it is the culmination of a century of conscious, deliberate violence against the Palestinian people. I call this phenomenon the shamelessness of evil: evil that asserts its right to exist openly, without hesitation or remorse. Moreover, the global bystanders silence implicitly legitimises the genocide. The universal values of goodness painstakingly built by humanity are being dismantled, and such a world must be decisively rejected. We must remember that moralitythat is, goodnessrequires a persistence that competes with death.
