Özet:

Social gender roles are patterns of attitudes and behaviors whose definition and boundaries are determined by society and are expected to be adhered by individuals. Oral tradition is a part of the symbolic system that determines relationships and roles between men and women, hence reflecting concepts of social gender roles. Individuals learn the roles expected of them by society through traditional oral narratives such as myths, epics, legends, fables, jokes, and proverbs. In this context, proverbs, which serve as memory encoders of Turkish culture, have been examined as reference points in reflecting cultural patterns and behavioral patterns. A thematic examination has been conducted on 250 proverbs from the Turkic World, selected through purposive sampling. In this study, unlike other studies, an attempt has been made to interpret the examined proverbs with a critical and analytical approach, the functions of proverbs in socialization have been determined, and findings have been presented regarding why there has not been the desired level of change in cultural life on this issue despite recent feminist activities, and suggestions have been made for what could be done. As a result of the study, it has been concluded that social gender is established within the cultural sphere and consists of a set of learned patterned behaviors centered around acceptance, attitude, and expectation and that these patterned behaviors are acquired through socio-cultural means. In this regard, proverbs have been found to play an imposing role as they form and transmit cultural patterns that contribute to the construction and acquisition of gender-specific identities.
