Özet:

The ancient city of Parion is situated in the northwestern part of modern-day Turkey, near the village of Kemer, within the boundaries of the Balıklıçeşme district of Biga in the province of Çanakkale. Although the city lies close to the southern coast of the Dardanelles Straitwhich connects the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean Seaand has been associated with various regions in ancient geographical sources, recent archaeological research provides a clearer framework for its regional attribution. In particular, systematic excavations conducted since 2005 have reinforced the view that Parion belonged to the Northern Troad, a conclusion supported by material evidence uncovered in the necropolis area. Archaeological investigations of the theater structure in Parion commenced in 2006 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Cevat Başaran. These excavations focused on the area east of the citys northern fortification wall, which also encompasses the stage building. The present study examines a fragmentary pediment block, one of the architectural components of the scaenae frons of the Parion theater. The mythological narrative concerning Hades abduction of Persephone into the Underworld, and the subsequent explanation of the origin of the seasons, will be examined within the framework of the composition depicted on the aforementioned fragmentary pediment. Within this evaluation, the sculptural style of the work will be analyzed, and a comparative study will be carried out with other examples that feature similar scenes. This study not only aims to catalogue the related piece of architectural sculpture but also seeks to provide a comparative reference framework that may be employed in the dating of similar sculptural finds likely to be unearthed in future excavations. In this context, an analysis of the artistic and narrative characteristics of the mythological scene represented on the piece will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the sculptural repertoire of the ancient city of Parion.
