Abstract The lands located in the southeast of the sea, which was called the Pontos Eukseinos the Black Sea in ancient times, were called the Pontos Region. This region was bordered by the Pontos Euxeinos in the north, the Halys River in the south and west, and the Apsarros River in the east. The Pontos region had two different climatic characteristics. The first one was the coastal areas with fertile wetlands and temperate climates, and the second was the inland parts with harsher weather conditions compared to the coastal part. The mountainous areas were important for mining and timber trade, while the coastal part was a significant hub for agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing, and trade. Consequently, thanks to its rich resources and temperate climate, the Pontos region became an attraction centre for people to settle there for ages. The autochthonous peoples such as Tibarenoi, Chalybes tribe, Mossynoikoi, Makrokephaloi, and Drilai etc. lived in the region and shaped it with their own social and cultural norms and traditions, so they were identified with the region. This study aims to exhibit the autochthonous peoples who lived in the Pontos Region during the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods and how their traditions and temperaments played a significant role in the formation of the socio-cultural history of the region.
