Özet:

This study aims to analyze Cengiz Aytmatovs novel The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years within the framework of Joseph Campbells theory of the archetypal journey, as presented in his work The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell defines the heros journey model as a universal narrative structure found in mythological stories, consisting of three main stages: Departure, Initiation, and Return. This model offers a narrative pattern in which the individual departs from the ordinary world, undergoes a process of transformation, and ultimately returns to the starting point with a new level of consciousness. In this study, Yedigeys journey, which begins with his decision to take Kazangaps body to the Ana-Beiit Cemetery, is analyzed through the lens of Campbells hero journey model. The first stage of the analysis focuses on Yedigeys acceptance of the Call to Adventure and his commitment to traditional values in undertaking the journey. His connection to the past, belief system, and sense of social responsibility constitutes the primary motivation for his quest. The physical and symbolic trials he encounters correspond to the Road of Trials stage in Campbells model, while characters such as Uzun Adilbay parallel the archetype of the Supernatural Helper. In the final part of the novel, Yedigeys exclusion by the bureaucratic system, the suppression of his effort to preserve collective memory, and his failure to reach the Ana-Beiit Cemetery lead to the incompletion of the Return stage in Campbells cycle. Furthermore, the absence of stages such as Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, Refusal of the Return, and Magic Flight indicates a conscious deviation from the classical structure of the heros journey.
