 The aim of the study is to examine the perceptions of 7th and 8th grade students about algebra learning in the context of associating concepts with daily life. The participants of the research which is designed as a case study from qualitative research methods consists of a total of 47 students, 20 7th grade students and 27 8th grade students in Sakarya. Mind maps and semi-structured interview form were applied during the data collection phase. Before the study was conducted, students were introduced by showing sample mind maps. Afterwards, students were asked to draw their own mind maps for the domain of algebra learning, write down all the concepts they learned about algebra, describe them, give examples, and associate these concepts with daily life. After the students thoughts on algebra were determined, four students from each grade level were interviewed one-on-one. The obtained data were analyzed according to the content analysis method. According to the findings, the students explained the concepts related to algebra mostly through examples; they wrote the concepts of algebra in their mind maps in line with the concept images; difficulties are experienced in associating the concepts of algebra with daily life; it was determined that the concept definitions for the algebra learning domain and the mind maps and explanations they drew were consistent. In this direction, it can be suggested to diversify the practices in the classroom environment so that students can enrich their perceptions of algebra and enable them to relate to daily life.

 Çalışmanın amacı 7. ve 8. sınıf öğrencilerinin cebir öğrenme alanı ile ilgili algılarının kavramları günlük yaşamla ilişkilendirebilme kapsamında incelenmesidir. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması olarak tasarlanan araştırmanın katılımcılarını 2021-2022 eğitim-öğretim yılı bahar döneminde Sakaryada bir devlet okulunda öğrenim gören 7. sınıf 20 öğrenci ve 8. sınıf 27 öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 47 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aşamasında zihin haritaları ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formları uygulanmıştır. Çalışma yapılmadan önce öğrencilere örnek zihin haritaları gösterilerek tanıtılmıştır. Daha sonra öğrencilerin cebir öğrenme alanına yönelik kendi zihin haritalarını çizmeleri ve cebir ile ilgili öğrendikleri tüm kavramları yazıp tanımlamaları, örneklendirmeleri, bu kavramları günlük yaşamla ilişkilendirmeleri istenmiştir. Öğrencilerin cebir ile ilgili düşünceleri belirlendikten sonra her iki sınıf düzeyinden dörder öğrenci ile birebir görüşülmüştür. Elde edilen veri içerik analizi yöntemine göre analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre öğrencilerin cebire yönelik kavramları çoğunlukla örnekler üzerinden açıkladıkları; zihin haritalarında kavram imajları doğrultusunda cebir kavramlarını yazdıkları; cebir kavramlarını günlük yaşamla ilişkilendirmede zorlukların yaşandığı; cebir öğrenme alanına yönelik kavram tanımları ile çizdikleri zihin haritaları ve açıklamalarının tutarlı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu doğrultuda öğrencilerin cebir algılarını zenginleştirebilmeleri ve günlük hayatla ilişki kurabilmelerini sağlayabilmeleri için sınıf ortamlarındaki uygulamaların çeşitlendirilmesi önerilebilir.
