Özet:

Due to the semantic differences they entail, shādh Qurʾānic readings hold significant importance in the field of Qurʾānic exegesis. This raises the question of how shādh readings have been evaluated in tafsīr literature, and necessitates an understanding of how exegetes have approached such variant recitations. This study examines the methodological approach to shawādhdh readings in Majma al-bayān fī tafsīr al-Qurʾān, authored by al-Ṭabarsī d. 5481153, one of the leading figures of the Shīʿī exegetical tradition. The central research question of this study concerns the extent to which al-Ṭabarsī engaged with shawādhdh al-qirāʾāt in his tafsīr, the methodologies he employed in approaching these variant readings, and the scholarly criteria by which he accepted or rejected them. The aim of the study is to identify how al-Ṭabarsī addressed shādh readings in his exegesis, to whom he attributed these readings, and how he utilized them in interpreting Qurʾānic verses. The exegetes extensive inclusion of shādh readings, his discussion of their evidentiary value under a dedicated heading, and his analytical approach -going beyond mere transmission to provide justification grounded in scholarly principlesdemonstrate that his work possesses a rich and nuanced treatment of variant readings. Indeed, al-Ṭabarsī did not reject reports containing the recitations of many companions, including those attributed to the first three of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs. On the contrary, he made extensive use of these readings in his interpretation of Qurʾānic verses. In this context, the study highlights al-Ṭabarsīs moderate stanceespecially when compared to the general approach of early Shīʿī exegetesand evaluates the methodology he employed in light of the science of Qurʾānic recitation, by emphasizing the importance he accorded to the reports transmitted by the ṣaḥābah and the tābiʿūn. In this study, through a qualitative analysis method, shādh readings found in Majma al-bayān are systematically identified, and their application in the tafsīr, methods of substantiation, and contributions to the interpretation and understanding of the Qurʾān are examined. Although there are various studies in the literature regarding al-Ṭabarsīs understanding of qirāʾāt, there is no systematic investigation specifically centered on the evaluation of shādh readings. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of the exegetes approach to shādh qirāʾāt. Furthermore, al-Ṭabarsīs stance toward shādh readings is significant both for understanding the exegetical methods of scholars from different sectarian backgrounds and for evaluating the role of shādh readings in grasping the meanings of the Qurʾān. In this respect, the study aims not only to present the approach of a single exegete but also to shed light on the broader relationship between qirāʾah and tafsīr in his time, as well as to contribute to our understanding of the Shīʿī exegetical tradition.
