Özet:

Shibli Nomani d.1914, one of the respected Muslim scholars and historians of India in the second half of the 19th century, is also a good example of modern period travel with his travel book called Safarnama-e-Rome-o-Misr-o-Shaam. The work in question covers the travels of Shibli to various countries of the Islamic geography and the observations and knowledge he gained there. At this point, Shibli Nomanis inclusion of Istanbul in his journey, one of the most important science, culture and civilization centers of both the world and the Islamic geography, has a profound effect on the love he had for the Ottoman Empire, which was the patron of the Islamic world. Because in the 19th century, being the capital of the Ottoman Empire and the center of science and wisdom that many Muslims and non-Muslims were in demand, Istanbul became one of the most respected cities in the world. In his aformentioned piece, Nomanis detailed mention of the world-renowned madrasahs and libraries of Istanbul, as well as the education system of the period, the media outlets and valuable scholars, about all aspects of scientific and cultural life, reveals this fact. While travelogues are handled as literary texts, there is another important mission, which is the historical course that opens the door to the turning point in which it was written. Although it contains the authors point of view and value judgments, it is important in terms of presenting the cultural codes of the period to the reader in many historical, political, literary and socio-cultural fields. In this study, we will examine the how he observed the scientific life in Istanbul since the last quarter of the 19th century and what determinations he made.
