Özet:

Every country, city or individual has its own methods of housing production, which they blend with their own localities, world views and architectural tendencies. As a housing production method, family apartments have existed in the intersection of the traditional and the modern for a limited period of time, and have survived primarily due to economic concerns and then due to the comfortable living opportunities they offer. Therefore, they bear traces of both the traditional and the modern, and are an important archive of the culture of life, the economic and sociological structure, and the architectural order of the geography in which they were built. With this perspective, the phenomenon of the family apartment building in Giresun, a city in the periphery of Anatolia, which considers housing as an important cultural and social indicator, is the focus of the study. The aim of the study is to examine these structures in conceptual and formal terms with reference to local situations, and to discuss them as an important part of the modernization process of the city, but one that has not received much attention. In this context, first of all, the family apartments in the city center, which still exist today, are identified; then their contexts, their relations with place and locality, their plan characteristics, massing and façade layouts are discussed through the social, spatial and economic structure of the period. As a result, by identifying the formal and conceptual commonalitiesdifferences of family apartment buildings both among themselves and with the residential buildings built before and after, a hidden section of the citys housing history has been revealed. In this way, it is expected to provide a new and different perspective on the citys modernization experience.
