Özet:

In Jane Eyre, written under the pseudonym Currer Bell, it is possible to find something from Charlotte Brontës own life and her state of existence. Moreover, since these are the themes that reveal the existential anxieties of many women, Jane Eyre is one of the most widely read works of the Brontë sisters alongside Emily Brontës Wuthering Heights. Throughout the book, we have the chance to follow Jane Eyre, who is subjected to many confinements and tries to escape from them, through the choices she makes. These choices alternate between those based on reason and those based on passion. Throughout these choices, Jane is accompanied by many characters. Among these characters, Helen Burns and St. John, who make the book suitable for a Stoic reading, show us Janes struggle to reconcile the passionate and rational aspects of her nature, and how this struggle resembles the distinction in Stoic philosophy between what is under our control and what is not. Stoic philosophy, which focuses on practice and free will, states that the choice between good and evil is up to the individual and that things in themselves cannot be called either absolutely good or absolutely evil. In addition, the concept of indifference adiaphora emphasizes the resilience or apathy we show against the difficulties we face in life. When it comes to resilience, Helen Burns is the character who stands before us. When it comes to apathy, we are confronted with St. John. In this context, the article aims to analyze these characters through the Stoic philosophy and how much they contribute to our reading of Jane as a Stoic.
