Özet:

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, composed by Modest Mussorgsky and inspired by the works of Russian artist Viktor Hartmann. The suite consists of five promenades and ten independent movements. Mussorgskys descriptive elements and personification techniques in his musical narrative give the work an impressionistic character, forming a symphonic poem within the context of piano composition. This unique quality caught the attention of French composer Maurice Ravel, inspiring him to create an orchestral arrangement that contributed to the pieces prominent place in the polyphonic music repertoire. Pictures at an Exhibition also stands as a significant example of Russian nationalism in music, reflecting impressionist influences within the Russian musical landscape. A review of the literature reveals that studies on the original piano version of the piece lack a holistic approach. Therefore, a detailed investigation into the musical and technical aspects of the work is considered essential for the literature. This study not only aims for an in-depth analysis but also seeks to explore the descriptive and narrative dimensions of Mussorgskys music. Consequently, the findings from this research are anticipated to serve as a valuable resource for musicologists, music theorists, and pianists.
