Özet:

Examining the historical line of Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s music within the scope of the research which has been performed to the present, it can be seen that this matter of concern has been handled in three periods, except for the close deviations in the start and end dates. Ahmed Adnan Saygun composed a work for the cello in each of his composing periods and these pieces are according to chronological order in the first period Op. 12 Cello-Piano Sonata (1936), in second period Op. 31 Partita for Solo Cello (1955), in the third period Op. 74 Cello Concerto (1987). Among these three works, Op. 12 Cello-Piano Sonata draws attention with its unique understanding of rhythm and ethnic Turkish motifs. The usage of the Ancient Greek modes, pentatonism and the colors of Turkish maqam music as the structural tools of the piece constitute characteristic features of Saygun’s music. In this sense, with this study, it is aimed to create a resource for music researchers who want to have information about the Op. 12 Cello-Piano Sonata, and for cellists and pianists who will perform the work. The cello-piano sonata consists of three parts, and is a work showing the effects of the first period of Saygun during which he made research on pentatonism and the maqam systematic.
