Özet:

While technology continues to evolve day by day, the freelance translation sector is getting richer in terms of translation technologies and maintains to address different demands and needs. Additionally, different actors are involved and interact with each other in the sector which can be described as a freelance translation network. In order to examine the interaction in the network and to trace the connections, this study examines the freelance translation network with a chain structure as pre-translation process and translation process within the framework of the Actor-Network Theory developed by Bruno Latour 1996. Phenomenological qualitative research design was used and the perspectives of the translators were applied in the study to interpret the actors participating within the network, besides their interactions in both processes, thus shedding light on the transformation process in the freelance translation activity. Therefore, the participating translators source preferences and process management were questioned and their position in the freelance translation network as well as their decision-making authority were evaluated through semi-structured interviews. As a result of the findings, it was determined that translators who were identified as obligatory passage points included actors such as computer-aided translation tools, online dictionaries and artificial intelligence in the network; shaped their source preferences according to the employers choice as well as easy-to-use and free computer-aided translation tools based on power relations; and turned into semi-free circulating actors. Thus, it was revealed that actors could include different actors in the network according to their interests and actions within the boundaries of freedom. A two-stage analysis of the freelance translation network within the scope of Actor-Network Theory is believed to contribute to understanding the dynamic structure between pre-translation process and translation process networks and to reveal the needs of translators and the industry.
