Özet:

The East-West issue became one of the main themes with the modernization of Turkish literature. With the examples of genres borrowed from the West, the limits of Westernization were tried to be determined; those who exceeded the limits were criticized as snobs. What to take from the West and what to embrace from the East were revealed by the authors in their works. The novels with theses were fictionalized with exemplary events that happened to snobs who became Westernized incorrectly; the ideal types who found a balance between the two civilizations were rewarded and heroized. During the Tanzimat period, the values determined through characters were presented to the reader as absolute truths through literature. Afterwards, it must be said that the issue of rightwrong Westernization remained on the agenda. Especially with the proclamation of the Republic, when the nation-state construction was added to correct Westernization, there was an increase in the number of novels with theses; writers who thought they had the power to decide what was right and wrong tried to guide their readers. However, in the relatively free and pluralistic literary environment after the proclamation of the Republic, as new literary genres became widespread and the works of writers from different backgrounds increased, new perspectives began to be put forward. Thus, while there was continuity in the view of Westernization, there were also ruptures. This article will focus on Peyami Safas Fatih-Harbiye, one of the cult texts of the idea of Westernization that has been going on since Tanzimat, and Safiye Erols Ülker Fırtınası, which looks at Westernization from a more positive perspective, and examine their different approaches to the same issue. It will be shown how Peyami Safas positioning of false Westernization and Safiye Erols reflection of the possibilities of Westernization, the similarities and differences of the two novels will be emphasized, and an idea of the state of the literary public of the 1930s will be tried to be given through the different conclusions they reach despite describing the same period.
