Özet:

Basra, founded by Muslims, quickly became an important center of culture and science. Similarly, some of the first representatives of Sufism grew up there. However, Hasan al-Basri and Rabia al-Adawiyya are generally mentioned as the representatives of zuhd in Basra. Nevertheless, significant zāhid lived in Basra before them. The aim of this study is to examine the life and understanding of zuhd of Âmir b. Abdillah, one of the Basra zāhid who influenced Hasan al-Basri. Since there is not enough information about Amir b. Abdillah in Sufi sources, the study is mostly based on Islamic historical sources. The research reveals that Amir b. Abdillahs fundamental idea was to purify his thoughts from worldly preoccupations and focus solely on Allah. Consequently, he did not marry and tried to remain constantly engaged in worship. However, this does not mean he completely distanced himself from social life. He criticized the caliph when he found it unjust and prevented the injustice done to a dhimmi non-Muslim citizens living in an Islamic state. Due to his zāhidlife and political criticisms, he was exiled from Basra.
