Özet:

This article aims to reveal the growth and spread of private hospitals throughout the country in the health system of Türkiye, which has been transformed by the health reforms carried out under the Health Transformation Program 2003-2013. Focusing on the spread of private hospitals, the distribution of hospitals in the country to sectors and provinces over the years has been descriptively investigated with the use of data covering the years 2002-2022. As a result of the evaluations in this article, which describes the development of private hospitals in the transformed Turkish health system and ultimately their place in the countrys health system, it has been observed that the role of privately-owned hospitals in the countrys health system has expanded in the last two decades. However, the main responsibility for the delivery of hospital services in Türkiye continues to be on the public sector. It has been observed that the number of hospitals in Türkiye increased during the Health Transformation Program 2003-13, and in the following years, hospitals continued to their growth in terms of hospital bed numbers. After the restrictive regulations enacted in the final stages of the Transformation Program, the growth of the private hospital sector after 2010 was driven by the capacity expansion of existing hospitals rather than the opening of new hospitals. The share of private hospitals increased from 23.4 in 2002 to 36.4 in 2014 and remained around 37 in the following years. The share of private hospital beds in total hospital beds grew from 7.5 in 2002 to 19.6 in 2014 and was around 21 in the following years. During the Transformation Program, it was observed that the number of private hospitals increased exponentially in the western and southern provinces of the country; private hospitals increased their presence in the eastern, southeastern, and northern provinces of the country; and the increase in the number of private hospitals in the northeastern provinces of the country was rare.
