Özet:

Press is defined as the collection, dissemination and interpretation of news. News gathering and dissemination activities have been carried out since ancient times. Howewer, the establishment of newspaper activities began in the eighteenth century. The introduction of newspapers to the Ottoman Empire was facilitated by the state. After the first newspaper was published, many newspapers began to be published. The printing of provincial newspapers laid the foundation for contemporary local journalism. Local newspapers generally published articles supporting the activities of the central government. For this reason, the number of printing houses increased during the Ottoman Empire period. In the early years of the Republic, the press was kept under control. The control of the press continued intermittently. After the army took over the government in 1960, several regulatory changes were implemented in the press. With the regulations made, the number of local newspapers increased during the republican period. The local press, which reports current events accurately and impartially, serves as a source for historical studies. In urban research, the initial information is often sought in the local newspaper archives. Local newspapers feature numerous reports on the history, culture, sociology and architecture of cities. The local newspaper, Halk Postası, published in Van, contains important information about the citys economic, social, political, health and educational conditions. This information sheds light on a specific period of the city and provides important insights into the development of the city.
