Özet:

Throughout the history, the mankind have often explicated the abstract concepts related to belief and thought by way of symbols. The symbols were also of key importance in the culture of Islamic mysticism in terms of narrating what contains deeper meanings. In particular, in the Anatolian dervish lodge culture, the religious order items, which may be utility items and clothing items and vary in shape and color depending on the religious order, emerge as symbolic items utilized both in daily life and in tersanctus and ceremonies practiced in the lodges. Said items, so-called the sect gadgets, are symbolic elements that have been embodied in the course of enlightenment of the dervishes to the spiritual maturity by attributing spiritual meanings thereto by the mystics. Total of 20 religious order items, i.e. 4 ensigns, 1 diadem, 1 capuche, 3 candelabras-candles, 1 bowl, 1 staff, 1 truncheon şeşper, 2 dhikr belt, 1 lamp, 1 prayer beads, 1 prayer rug and 3 plates, all preserved at Dede Osman Avni Lodge, an important Kadiri sheikh who resided in Urfa during the final era of the Ottoman Empire, constitute the subject matter of this study. The materials, techniques, adornments, as well as the inscriptions thereon and historical aspects of said items were analyzed and evaluated in this study. The religious order items analyzed under the study were made of materials such as metal, wood, fabric, wool, porcelain and plaster by employing techniques such as casting, forging, carving and molding to shape said items. Engraving, embossing and puncturing techniques were employed to create the ornaments and inscriptions thereon. The compositions depicted on the adornments consist of vegetal and geometric motifs as well as motifs featuring objects, while majority of the inscriptions on the items are of religious nature. The study elaborated on the symbolic meanings of the religious order items preserved at Dede Osman Avni Lodge in Urfa in the Islamic mysticism culture-tradition, and said items were analyzed in the sense of art history discipline with intentions to contribute to the literature relevant with this subject.
