Özet:

Turkish Electricity Corporation founded with concessions by foreign capital for operating electricity services in Istanbul was nationalized with effect from 31 December 1937. The main focus of this study is the history of electricity services under the direction of Istanbul Electric Tram and Tunnel Company İETT which was established as a municipal corporation. The improvements and capacity increase at the electricity power station, the development of the network through years by new investments in the transmission and distribution lines, changes in tariff systems and the increase in the number of subscribers are discussed diachronically. Covering the period between 1938 and 1960 we conducted a mostly quantitative study and provided numerical analysis. Hence our principal sources are the statistical data collected by the State Planning Organization, Turkish Institute of Statistics and Istanbul Municipality as well as Budget and Operations reports of İETT. A comparison of electric energy consumption during the single-party rule under the presidency of İsmet İnönü and the multi-party regime led by the rule of Democrat Party constitutes the primary goal of this study. An analysis of the sectoral distribution of electric energy consumption, comparing the per capita electricity production and consumption in Istanbul and the rest of the country and their change over the years helps to get a better picture of the economic performance in those periods. The increase in production as well as the numbers of subscribers in Istanbul during the rule of the Democrat Party is approximately three times more than that during the single-party regime. Despite the rising trend in the citys population, the per-capita production and consumption of electric energy in Istanbul between the years 1950-1960 has increased two-folds compared to the increase in the period 1938-1949.
