Özet:

This study aimed to reveal the disaster awareness and disaster culture of 10 students studying in the 4th grade of the Social Studies teaching department, and interviews were conducted within this scope. The research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form. Although it was seen that the teacher candidates had a lot of information about disasters, it can be said that they could not provide explanations that were completely in line with disaster awareness and culture. In fact, it was determined that they gave answers to all the questions asked to them in this study on disasters on the axis of earthquake disaster. This situation suggests that the teacher candidates were greatly affected by the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake that occurred recently. In terms of knowledge accumulation regarding the management of the disaster process as required by the disaster cycle, it is seen that the teacher candidates cannot make comprehensive evaluations. It is thought that this situation is due to the short hours of the courses related to disaster education given at the university and the limited opportunities to support these trainings with practical activities. For this reason, it is thought that the hours of courses given on disasters at universities should be increased and application examples should be included in the content of the courses.
