Özet:

Muqaddimah, authored by Ibn Khaldun in the 14th century, resonated widely not only in its own time but also in later intellectual circles. Following its translation into Western languages in the 19th century, it came to be recognized as one of the foundational texts of sociology by early social scientists. This study examines Muqaddimah through the lens of the sociology of the body, employing a qualitative document analysis of both explicit and implicit references to the body within the text. The analysis identifies four main thematic categories: foundational concepts, the bodyenvironment relationship, the body as a socially constructed entity, and the relationship between body and being. Findings reveal that Ibn Khaldun conceptualizes the body not merely as a physical entity, but as one that also possesses social and metaphysical dimensions. While bodily characteristics are shaped by environmental and social factors, the body is simultaneously portrayed as a vehicle for engaging with the transcendental realm. This multi-layered approach suggests that Ibn Khalduns perspective on the body can be meaningfully connected to contemporary debates in the sociology of the body. Issues such as obesity, consumer culture, mechanization, and the instrumentalization of the body reflect themes that Muqaddimah addresses in a remarkably prescient manner, offering potential contributions to current theoretical frameworks.
