Özet:

This study examines the transformation of Lucera, located in southern Italy in the 13th century, into a Muslim settlement as a result of the relocation of Muslims who had been expelled from Sicily. It explores the roles Lucera assumed with this identity and its ultimate demise. Lucera, which has not been adequately examined by scholars in the field of Islamic history, represents a unique chapter in medieval European history. In Turkish academic literature, for example, Lucera has been mentioned only as the final destination of the exiled Muslims from Sicily, without being subject to a detailed examination. Following the Norman conquest of Sicily and subsequent Hohenstaufen rule, Frederick II forcibly resettled Sicilian Muslims to Lucera as part of a broader strategy to control and utilize this population. This forced exile was different from others in that the population was moved not to the exteriors of the borders of the ruling country, but to the heart of southern Italy. Established as a Muslim enclave, Lucera thrived economically and militarily, contributing significantly to the crown while maintaining its Islamic identity within an otherwise missionary Christian geopolitical landscape. During this period, Lucera became a significant center that contributed economically to the ruling Hohenstaufen and Angevin dynasties of southern Italy through tax revenues and military services. Its agricultural productivity, particularly in wheat, wine, and olive oil, alongside its skilled artisanal crafts and trade, made it indispensable to the crown. The city also served as a critical military outpost, supplying trained archers and soldiers who played pivotal roles in royal armies. As there are limited historical and archeological materials that would enlighten modern historians as to the nature of the Muslim culture in the city, one cannot be certain as to how Islam shaped the lives of the residents. However, it is known that the city had a mosque, the call to prayer was made, and madrasa was probably established. In any case, the Islamic character of the population was sufficiently distinct to provoke Papal discontent, rendering this Muslim settlement precariously positioned within the volatile political landscape of 13th century southern Europe. Drawing from royal correspondences, archival materials, and contemporary narratives, this study reconsiders the settlements trajectory from its establishment to its annihilation in 1300 under Charles II of Anjou. It evaluates Luceras socio-political and economic structures, exploring how the settlement functioned as an integrated yet segregated entity within the kingdom. It also examines the different explanations speculated by historians on the motivations for Luceras destruction. Earlier scholarship often attributed this event to religious zeal and political considerations, casting Charles II as a devout crusader aligned with the Papacy in his efforts to eradicate the Muslim presence. While this perspective holds merit, it oversimplifies the multifaceted reasons behind Luceras demise. Other historians have pointed to the financial gains the crown might have secured from liquidating Luceras assets, including its goods and population. More recent studies have sought to contextualize this seemingly irrational act within the framework of state-building efforts. These different interpretations are the result of a lack of concrete historical evidence aside from the textual correspondence containing royal decrees concerning Lucera as well as letters exchanged with the Papacy. While these sources offer rich material that helps reconstruct the political and social history of Muslim Lucera, they reflect the biases and rhetoric of ruling elites, resulting in skewed perspectives. Acknowledging the limitations posed by such availability bias, this article evaluates the competing explanations for Luceras destruction. It proposes that the attack was a tactical decision by Charles II, driven by the volatile political environment of shifting loyalties and allegiances. It suggests that, in an effort to convert a perceived vulnerability into a strategic advantage, Charles II executed a well-planned liquidation of Muslim Lucera decision that, in the years following, created significant challenges to the welfare of the Angevin throne.
