Özet:

The branch of science that investigates the emergence of place names, their development in the historical process, and tries to explain them in terms of meaning and origin is called toponymy. Toponymy studies are carried out in order to enlighten the historical geography of a country or a city. The lack of interest in such studies, which were mostly carried out in our country in the 1970-80s, has left the questions about the origin of many place names in Anatolia unanswered. As a matter of fact, this lack of interest has led to serious discussions about the origin of place names in Çorum province and its region despite being home to many civilisations. This study has been prepared in order to give information about the rumours about the origin of the name Çorum and other names of the city allegedly used in the past, to explain its historical origin and to make some determinations.
