Özet:

In the 1960s, the first generation of Turkish workers who migrated to Germany came from rural regions of Anatolia and encountered a markedly different cultural environment, which led to various adaptation challenges. Their efforts to preserve traditional ways of life often hindered their ability to learn German and integrate into German society. In contrast, subsequent generations, who experienced both Turkish and German cultures, reflected on these experiences through a literary lens and made significant contributions to migrant literature. In this study, reflections of memory and identity in Zafer Şenocaks essay Zungenentfernung: Bericht aus der Quarantänestation were analyzed within the context of migrant literature. The focus was placed on how generations who remain distant from their homeland, as well as from its language, culture, and religious rituals, strive to preserve a sense of belonging and identity. Furthermore, a comparative analysis was conducted between Şenocaks essay and Reinhard Jirgls novel Die Unvollendeten, with a particular emphasis on themes of identity and cultural memory. Within this framework, it is observed that the works of Zafer Şenocak and Reinhard Jirgl, despite originating from distinct cultural and historical arguments, converge on a shared thematic ground when addressing migration and memory. Both authors engage with the relationship individuals and communities establish with their homelanda space rooted in childhood and filled with accumulated memoriesand critically examine how this relationship influences the construction of memory and identity.
