Özet:

Unye Port, located in the middle of the Black Sea, has gradually increased its importance with the developing weaving industry in Tokat and Amasya since the 18th century. The geographical location and the ease of transportation to the inner parts have been effective in the importance of Ünye Port. While the port gradually regressed after the steamships had started voyages in the region and the northern regions came out of Ottoman domination, it started to develop again with its background and commercial networks as of the second half of the 19th century. Thus, the population increased, a significant migration was experienced, and a dynamism came to the economic activities. The mobility brought by the Crimean War to the southern Black Sea ports was another factor this development. However, the main reason was Europes demand for Ottoman agricultural products in the 19th century. It is impossible to ignore the impact of the change in the mode of production and relations created by European trade in the Ottoman ports on the development of many of the Eastern Black Sea coastal settlements and the evolution of some of them from a pier to a port city. The rise of ports such as Samsun and Ünye, which are the gateways to a wide background such as Amasya, Tokat and Sivas, resulted from the steady increase in agricultural production supported by this foreign demand. In this way, Ünye, which became one of the important ports of the Southern Black Sea coast towards the end of the century, gained an important commercial activity. The aim of this study is to reveal the commercial development of Ünye port, which started to stand out the second half of the 19th century.
