Özet:

The Turkish Republic, whose 101st birthday was celebrated in 2024, with both its administration and its people, has always been interested in translation activity to develop its society and culture. This interest, which started in Middle Asia and continued in Anatolia since the 13th and 14th centuries, was accentuated with the first literary and philosophical translations from the West in the Tanzimat period and increased in the Turkish Republic cf. Ülken, 1935; Toska, 2002, p. 58. This research focuses on this deep-rooted interest in the Turkish Republic between its establishment in 1923 and its First Translation Studies Symposium in 1979 see Eruz, 2003, p. 135 within the context of some important institutions, activities and the discourses of its agents Even-Zohar, 2002, p. 172. Thus, the translation activity in the early period of the Turkish Republic is examined under three subtitles: The Establishment of the Republic 1923-1939, The Translation Bureau 1939-1967 and The Period before the Academic Translation Activity 1967-1979 see Çavuşoğlu, 2016. The purpose of the research is to describe this Turkish sociocultural journey from tercüme Ottoman-Turkish term for translation to çeviri translation, and then from çeviri to çeviribilim modern Turkish term for translation studies with its bonds with its past, agents and products such as terms, journals, books, conventions and to emphasize the important role of this translation activity on the development of both Turkish language, society, culture and the international society and culture. Based on Tourys Target-oriented Theory 1980 and Vermeers Skopos Theory 1989, the research also approaches translation activity as a social practice Chesterman, 2006, s. 9 and a culture planning Even-Zohar, 1994 in accordance with Niklas Luhmanns 1995 theory named Social Systems, trying to contribute to the sustainability and memory of the translation system or translation institution Hermans, 1995 in Türkiye.
