Özet:

Karaköy is an abandoned historical rural settlement located in the Çeşme district of İzmir. It has been gradually abandoned since the mid-20th century due to social, economic, political, natural and environmental factors. Despite its approximately 300-year history and its tangible and intangible cultural heritage, no comprehensive study has been conducted focusing on this settlement. The aim of this study is to examine the historical development and abandonment process of Karaköy rural settlement and its surroundings, which reflects traces of different periods from prehistory to the present, in a holistic manner with its local values. Within this scope, the geographical features, conservation status, and the origin of the settlements name have been examined, and its historical development has been presented according to different periods. Additionally, land use in the village and its surroundings has been mapped and visualized. The research method includes fieldwork, literature survey, archive review and mapping. The spatial scale of the study was determined based on the borders of the early 20th century, when village life was active, instead of the current administrative borders of Karaköy. In this context, it emphasizes that investigation and documentation studies on historical rural areas should adopt a holistic approach, considering not only the settled area but also its surrounding environment. As a result of the study, it was determined that Karaköy was established as a YorukTurkish village around the early 18th century, but it was abandoned due to reasons such as water scarcity, earthquakes, insufficient educational opportunities, and lack of transportation and infrastructure, leading to its current ruined state.
