Özet:

In 19th century, Samsun gradually became one of most important centers of Ottoman Empire with start of trade in Black Sea, especially Russia, as well as the states such as France and England, and economic return of tobacco cultivation in region. Thus, due to internal migration to region, non-Muslim population started to increase again and over time they formed the majority in city center. However, this population declined considerably after Armenian deportation and exchange agreement in the first quarter of 20th century. Especially in the republic period, immigration from the Eastern Black Sea region also led to an increase in the population. Samsun has also received significant immigration from neighboring provinces. The metropolitan position of the city compared to the surrounding provinces and the abundance of opportunities are the main factors of this. As a result of these developments, Samsun surpassed Trabzon at the end of the first half of the twentieth century and became the first city of the Black Sea. In this article, while analyzing the population of Samsun, firstly the Ottoman archives of the Presidency of the Republic were examined, and then the population data in the provincial salnames of Trabzon, to which Samsun was affiliated, were analyzed. The information obtained from these sources was compared with other studies on the subject and a conclusion was reached.
