Özet:

The fear that pushes people to become we instead of me is the fundamental and perhaps the most powerful emotion that plays a role in forming social structure and the governing-governed relationships in this structure. This emotion is used by those who rule and those who want to rule it with the support and consent of the people to gain the areas of power, and protect and expand these areas. Sources of fear on health, economy, terrorism, war, democracy, and similar issues are used more intensively to provide the referrals and management of people, especially during election periods. Social media platforms, which enable access to large masses in a very short time, serve to spread these fears created for specific purposes. Twitter, which has become a medium for social movements and political issues, is also a medium where these fears are produced, distributed, and consumed. In this context, to clarify the use of fear in the direction of political interests, the tweets shared by leaders of political parties in the Cumhur and Millet Alliance during the preparation period for the 2023 Turkish Presidential Elections were analyzed using the content analysis method. This study, which is limited to tweets shared over a two-week period, is important as it is one of the rare studies analyzing fear in the context of Twitter and politics. As a result of the analyses, it was found that fear, if used in reasonable proportions, helps to reach wider audiences, but that the culture of fear alone does not play a decisive role in political success.
