Özet:

It is known that in the region where the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was sent, people had corrupted and strayed from the monotheistic belief that Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail had preached over time, influenced by their desires and whims. This era is specifically referred to as the Djahiliyya period. Some of the beliefs, culture, and behaviors that people held in the pre-Islamic period were carried over into the Islamic period. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him did not aim to change all of these; rather, he sought to correct the aspects that deviated from the monotheistic belief. Consequently, Islam developed an attitude towards the incorrect features and conditions of the society into which it was born. Some of these were abolished, some were left untouched, and some were corrected. Despite this, the Djahiliyya period often has negative connotations in peoples minds. Among the wrong practices of the Arabs during the Djahiliyya period, certain attitudes towards children were highlighted, with the most extreme example being the burying of baby girls alive. In this study, we aimed to outline the attitudes children encountered from birth, their roles and responsibilities within the family, and the general perception of children in the pre-Islamic period. Accordingly, topics such as the reasons for giving children to wet nurses, the places where they received education, and the games they frequently played are discussed. The purpose of this study is to identify, through examples, the social and cultural lifestyle of children living during the Djahiliyya period. Despite the limited information about children in the pre-Islamic period, this study aims to determine, in the light of available sources and historical documents, what kind of life children faced from birth and the process of their integration into society. In conclusion, despite all the negative connotations of the Djahiliyya period, it can be seen as a period with a societal life worth examining in terms of giving children to wet nurses, taking care of their education, and not excluding them from social spheres.

Hz.
