Özet:

The number of people migrating from their own country to other countries due to compulsory reasons is increasing every year. While the immigrants have problems meeting their basic needs in the new country with their asylum status, they also try to adapt to the host society. It is very important to meet the educational needs of the asylum seekers in order to adapt them in the society they live in. Besides, their education is crucial to provide that society does not approach them with prejudice. In this study, news items and commentaries in the Turkish press about the education of Syrian refugees who came to Turkey were analyzed by content analysis method. As the sample, the items published by Hürriyet, Sabah, and Sözcü newspapers between 2016 and 2020 were included in the sample. In the analyses, it was seen that the highest number of items was published in Hürriyet and the least number was published in Sabah. It was found that most news items about the asylum seekers are related to the themes such as education opportunities and supports offered to them, the number of students and children, and social activities. It was observed that different definitions of asylum seekers were included in the news content and no common discourse was produced on this issue. Besides, it was explored that positive language is used in Sabah as the way of presenting the coverage while there are positive and balanced (neutral) news items published by Hürriyet. The other paper Sözcü covers positive and balanced coverage and as much as negative representations. It can be argued that the political/ideological stance of the newspapers may be effective in the formation of the difference in their coverage. According to these findings, it can be suggested that the newspapers prefer more positive language on education and children compared to other news topics about asylum seekers.

Zorunlu nedenlerle kendi ülkesinden başka ülkelere göç edenlerin sayısı her geçen yıl giderek artmaktadır.
