Özet:

Population censuses are carried out within certain periods to determine the various characteristics of the human population living in a certain place. The general census held in 1927 was the first census of the Republic of Turkey. Although censuses were carried out during the Ottoman Empire, the first detailed information about the population of Turkey emerged with the general census of 1927. In this general census, detailed characteristics of the population of Bilecik province were determined, as in other provinces of Turkey. The population was identified and classified according to gender, age range, literacy, marital status, professions, native languages spoken, nationality, place of birth, religious beliefs and disability status. These features were also determined at the district level. The aim of this study is to examine and evaluate the population characteristics determined in Turkey and the province of Bilecik according to the results of the 1927 general census, which was the first general census of the Republic of Turkey, and to make interpretations regarding the population characteristics within the scope of cause-effect, connection and distribution principles of geography science and to produce results. It is also aimed that the conducted study will lead to related geographical studies to be carried out later. In the study, detailed characteristics of the population examined both in Turkey and Bilecik province by using the necessary sources, and the data grouped and evaluated with tables. Within the scope of cause-effect and connection principles of geography science, the population characteristics of Bilecik province compared with those of Turkey in general, comparisons made and comments made. According to the results of the general population census in 1927, when the characteristics of the population in Bilecik province evaluated in general, the fact that the values of population characteristics in the province were higher than the average of Turkey revealed that the province of Bilecik was in a better situation than many provinces of Turkey under the conditions of that time.
