Özet:

In Russian literature, there is no consensus on who the first image of a superfluous man is. In the literature review, the names of Chatsky, one of the main characters of the play Woe from Wit by Alexander Griboyedov, or Onegin, one of the main characters of the poetic novel Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin, stand out. Another topic of disagreement is whether Chatsky is a superfluous man. In this study, we sought answers to the questions of who the first image of a superfluous man is in Russian literature and whether Chatsky can be evaluated in this context. Deductive, comparative analysis and image-centered analysis methods were used in the study. The research materials consisted of the works Woe from Wit and Eugene Onegin, as well as research on the image of a superfluous man. In the examination, the general characteristics of a superfluous man were identified and adapted to Chatsky. As a result, it was seen that Chatsky did not generally carry the characteristics of a superfluous man. Conclusions were drawn on why the character should be considered a superfluous man or not. It was concluded that the characterization of untimely man would be more appropriate for Chatsky instead of superfluous man.
