 This study examines the length measurement performance of 5th-grade middle school students through a qualitative case study involving 360 participants. Data were collected using the Length Measurement Test, developed by the researchers, and analyzed using a descriptive analysis approach. Student responses were evaluated across seven dimensions: comparison, naming, representation, estimation, measurement, conversion, and problem-solving. The results indicated that students performed well in standard tasks, such as reading and writing numbers and units in conventional formats, estimating linear lengths, and using rulers with a zero starting point. In contrast, they demonstrated difficulties with non-standard naming tasks, often misinterpreted non-linear lengths as linear, and encountered challenges in estimating and measuring such lengths. Further difficulties were observed in representing specified lengths and utilizing measurement tools with a non-zero starting point e.g., broken rulers. These findings underscore the importance of addressing all seven dimensions to effectively support students conceptual understanding of length measurement.

 Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin uzunluk ölçme konusundaki performanslarını değerlendirmektir. Çalışma, nitel araştırma yaklaşımı çerçevesinde bir durum çalışması olarak tasarlanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 360 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen Uzunluk Ölçme Testi kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin teste verdikleri yanıtlar, betimsel analiz yaklaşımıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada ele alınan uzunluk ölçme sürecinin yedi boyutunda karşılaştırma, adlandırma, temsil, tahmin, ölçme, dönüştürme ve problem çözme elde edilen sonuçlara göre, öğrencilerin alışılmış biçimde verilen sayı ve birimi doğru okumayazma, doğrusal uzunluğu tahmin etme ve başlangıç noktası sıfır olan cetvelle uzunluğu belirleme konularında daha yeterli oldukları belirlenmiştir. Ancak, alışılmışın dışında verilen sayı ve birimi adlandırma görevlerinde düşük performans sergiledikleri görülmüştür. Ayrıca öğrencilerin, doğrusal olmayan uzunlukları doğrusal gibi algılama hatasına düştükleri, bu tür uzunluklar üzerinde bir sayının yerini doğru tahmin edemedikleri ve doğrusal olmayan uzunlukları ölçerken hatalar yaptıkları belirlenmiştir. Benzer şekilde, başlangıç noktası sıfırdan farklı olan ölçme araçlarında örneğin, kırık cetvel doğrusal uzunlukları doğru belirleme ve istenen uzunluğu verilen birime göre temsil etme çizme görevlerinde yetersiz kaldıkları gözlemlenmiştir. Bu nedenle, öğrencilerde uzunluk ölçme anlayışının geliştirilmesinde çalışmada ele alınan yedi boyutun dikkate alınması önerilmektedir.
